Native to: Tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas (mainly South and Central America)

Lighting Requirements: Bright, indirect light to partial shade. Full sun can scorch leaves in hotter climates.

Height: 12 to 30 inches, depending on the variety

Width: 12 to 24 inches, depending on the variety

Winter Look: Dormant in winter; most die and do not come back

Seasonal Interest: Primarily summer to fall. Caladiums are known for their vibrant foliage and ornamental leaves.

Drought Tolerance: Low. Requires consistent moisture, especially during active growth.

Soil Requirements: Well-draining, rich, and fertile soil. Prefers moist soil but not waterlogged conditions.

pH Range: 5.5 to 6.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)

Hardiness Zones: USDA Zones 9 to 11 (can be grown as annuals in colder zones)

Deer Resistance: Low. Deer nibble on Caladiums. 

Attracts: Hummingbirds, butterflies

Toxicity: Toxic to pets (cats and dogs). Contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation.

Potential Issues: Susceptible to fungal infections. 

Notes: Caladiums are primarily grown for their foliage rather than flowers, with striking leaf patterns. 

Plant these when the soil has warmed to about 70 degrees (typically late April). They prefer a pH of 5.5 - 6.5 and would benefit from a bit of cotton seed meal if you plant them in the ground.
