Scientific Name: Tagetes lucida
Common Names: Mexican Mint Marigold, Mexican Tarragon, Sweet Mace, Texas Tarragon
Lighting Requirements: Full sun to partial shade
Height: 2 to 3 feet
Width: 1 to 2 feet
Seasonal Interest: Yellow, daisy-like flowers bloom in late summer to fall; aromatic, glossy green leaves
Winter Look: Dies back
Drought Tolerance: Moderate; can handle some drought once established
Deer Resistance: High
Attracts: Bees, butterflies
Hardiness Zones: 8 to 11
Soil Requirements: Well-draining soil, adaptable to various soil types
pH Range: 6.0 to 7.5
Native To: Mexico and Central America
Potential Disease Issues: Disease-free in my experience
Notes: Often used as a culinary herb with a flavor similar to French tarragon; pinch back in early growth to encourage bushier shape; tolerates heat well. Can reseed in the garden. This is one plant that I like trim back before the bloom period begins (not after July/August). This keeps it more compact and under control.
