Common Names: Japanese Aralia, Paper Plant, Glossy-leaf Paper Plant

Lighting Requirements: Partial shade to full shade

Height: 5 to 8 feet 

Width: 4 to 6 feet 

Seasonal Interest: Evergreen foliage, glossy dark green leaves

Winter Look: Retains leaves; can look lush even in winter

Drought Tolerance: Moderate; prefers consistent moisture

Deer Resistance: Moderate

Hardiness Zones: 7 to 10 (USDA)

Soil Requirements: Well-drained, rich, loamy soil

pH Range: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5 to 7.5)

Potential Disease Issues: Root rot, leaf spot, aphids, scale insects

Notes: I have heavy clay soil and have always lost them to root rot. I know of at least a few growing in Georgetown (west of I-35) that are doing really well.
