Varieties of Mondo Grass

1. Dwarf Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana')

   • Height: 2 to 4 inches 

   • Width: 6 to 8 inches 

   • Description: Compact, low-growing variety commonly used as a ground cover, between stepping stones or rocks, or as a lawn replacement where grass won't grow; evergreen and extremely hardy.

2. Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens')

   • Height: 6 to 8 inches

   • Width: 6 to 12 inches 

   • Description: Striking dark purple to nearly black foliage; Flowers are pale pink, and berries are blue-black. I haven't had much luck with these, but that may just be me.

3. Kyoto Dwarf Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus 'Kyoto')

   • Height: 2 to 3 inches 

   • Width: 4 to 6 inches 

   • Description: A dense, low-growing variety ideal for Japanese-style gardens; creates a “moss-like” effect and can tolerate light foot traffic. I've seen this one sold online, but not locally.

4. Silver Mist Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus 'Silver Mist')

   • Height: 8 to 10 inches 

   • Width: 8 to 10 inches 

   • Description: Variegated green and white striped leaves, adding a lighter texture and contrast to shaded areas; evergreen and hardy. I've also seen this one online and not commonly in local nurseries.
