Scientific Name: Symphyotrichum oblongifolium
Common names: Fall Aster, Aromatic Aster

Lighting requirements: Full sun
Height: 2-3 feet
Width: 2-4 feet (can spread a bit)
Seasonal interest: Late summer to fall, with purple or blue daisy-like flowers
Drought tolerance: Moderate
Deer resistance: Yes, but they'll browse if they're super hungry
Attracts: Bees, butterflies
Hardiness Zones: 4-8
Soil requirements: Well-drained, loamy or sandy soil, rocky limestone seems to be okay too
pH range: 6.0 - 7.5
Native to: Central and Eastern United States
Potential disease issues: Powdery mildew, rust (I've never seen any issues)
Fun Facts: Fall Asters are known for their late-season blooms, providing striking color and pollinator support in the garden while other plants are fading.Â
Notes: I've seen them bloom in the spring, but nothing like their fall show, though! I have a client that's growing them in near full shade. They don't have disease issues and will bloom a bit, but they are so leggy that it's not worth it.
