Creeping Jenny
Creeping Jenny
Scientific Name: Lysimachia nummularia
Common Names: Creeping Jenny, Moneywort, Common Creeping Jenny
Native to: Europe, Western Asia, and parts of North Africa
Lighting Requirements: Full sun to partial shade
Height: 4 to 6 inches
Width: Spreads 12 to 18 inches, depending on growing conditions
Winter Look: Semi-evergreen in mild climates; dies back in colder regions
Seasonal Interest: Bright green or golden foliage in spring and summer
Drought Tolerance: Low to moderate; prefers consistent moisture but tolerates brief dry spells once established
Soil Requirements: Moist, well-drained soil; prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil
pH Range: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0)
Hardiness Zones: USDA Zones 3–9
Deer Resistance: Moderately resistant
Potential Issues: It can spread aggressively in the garden and potentially become invasive in some regions; it may require containment if planted in garden beds. I have not experienced its aggressiveness in Central Texas.
Notes: Excellent ground cover for moist or shaded areas; adds vibrant color to landscapes, especially in hanging baskets, containers, or as a border. Provides a dense, low-maintenance mat that can help with erosion control.
